Jelanie Evence is a St. Lucian American contemporary artist born in 2003 and based in New York. Working primarily in oil, Evence creates figurative paintings and portraits exploring Black identity through themes of divinity, royalty, dignity, self-possession, and tranquility. Drawing from history, culture, and imagination, his practice combines classical figurative approaches with cinematic lighting, expressive environments, and architectural and natural settings. His paintings move between portraits of specific individuals and imagined figures and scenes, creating moments of intimacy, majesty, and presence. Through his evolving practice, Evence seeks to create images in which Black figures are presented with authority, beauty, and an inherent sense of nobility and command.
